Daniell, John Arthur Helton

Son of James Livett Daniell, solicitor, and Sophie B Daniell of 12 Clyde Park, Bristol. Younger brother of Ellen M M, and older brother of Phillip F. Daniell was working as a solicitor prior to the War. Daniell married Emily Hilda Young, a novelist, in Epsom, Surrey in 1902.

 

Daniell was born on 16/11/1874, and attended the School from 1885-1891. He served as a Sergeant in the Army, with the Royal Garrison Artillery 168th Siege Bty.. Daniell sadly lost his life on 01/07/1917, as a result of the War.

 

Daniell is buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium, grave reference VIII.H.11.

He Insisted on Going to France (BGS Chronicle December 1917)

"Left the School in 1891, and became a solicitor, with first-class honours in the examination, in 1901. For some time he directed the free Legal Dispensary at the Broad Plain Settlement. He was formerly in the Artillery branch of the Volunteers, and after being rejected for service in the present war, finally entered the R.G.A. as Instructor. He insisted on going to France to share the common danger, though over military age, and was killed on July 1st."

 

 

The E H Young Memorial Prize

The E H Young Memorial Prize for an essay on Greek thought was first awarded in 1951. It was established by Ralph Bushill Henderson in memorial E H Young, wife of Daniell, who wrote a number of novels with Clifton as the setting. The award originally carried a prize of £10.

First awarded in 1951, it was founded in memory of E H Young, the author of many novels with Clifton as the background, by Ralph Bushill Henderson. He became a schoolmaster, Headmaster of Alleyn’s School, Dulwich and adviser to the Archbishop of Canterbury on Moral Issues. He was also briefly Headmaster of BGS in the winter of 1942 – 1943 to cover the gap between R W Moore and John Garrett.

After Daniell died in the War, Young lived in a flat in the Henderson’s house from around 1921 until the outbreak of WWII, this period being well described in the introductions of the Virago editions of EH Young’s work.

 

At some time during WWII Young bought Priory Cottage in Bradford on Avon and resided there sufficiently often for her to serve with the ARP. There is a photo of her with her fellow volunteers in the Bradford on Avon Museum.

After the war Henderson finally separated from his wife who went to live in Weston super Mare where she died in 1961. Henderson and Young settled in Bradford on Avon where they were associated with both the Bentley School, Calne and Fitzmaurice Grammar School, Bradford on Avon.

 

Young died in 1949 and Henderson then took up a lectureship at Keele, Staffordshire where he died in 1958. All these deaths can be found via Ancestry.com.

The prize at BGS was not the only one Henderson endowed in memory of EH Young. One hundred pounds each was bequeathed to Penrhos College, Colwyn Bay; The Bentley School, Calne, Wilts; and the Fitzmaurice School, Bradford on Avon. He also endowed a lectureship at Bristol University ‘the EH Young Lecture’.
 

Henderson was a classmate of Daniell, and was at BGS from 1894 - 1898.
