Son of Henry King, works manager, and Margaret King, of 1 Greville Road, Southville. Older brother of Archie, who also served.

 

King was born on 14/09/1890, and attended the School from 1901-1904. He served as a Lieutenant in the Army, with the Gloucestershire Regiment 1st/6th Bn. He was awarded the Military Cross. King sadly lost his life on 18/04/1917, as a result of the War.

 

King is buried in Villers-Faucon Communal Cemetery, France, grave reference D. 51.

Heavy Machine-Gun Fire

King was awarded the Military Cross on 22nd September 1916. Gazette issue 29760, page 9277. The London Gazette reported that it was awarded for:

For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led his platoon under very heavy machine-gun fire after suffering severe casualties. On the next night he showed great coolness in steadying his men during a heavy bombardment.
