Son of Alfred Golding, cashier, of 76 Cranbrook Road, Redland.

 

Golding was born on 02/07/1897, and attended the School from 1909-1914. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 9th Bn.. Golding sadly lost his life on 01/07/1916, as a result of the War.

 

Golding is buried in Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-la-Boisselle, France, grave reference II. N. 4.

Advancing with his Platoon (BGS Chronicle December 1916)

"aged 19, 1909-1914. He left from the Upper Fourth on the Modern Side, and was killed on July 1st serving as Second-Lieut in the Yorkshire Light Infantry. The Chaplain wrote to his father: 'He was advancing with his platoon with the Sergeant beside him, when suddenly he said to the Sergeant 'Sergeant, you had better go to the side of the platoon, and i will stay in the centre as I would not like the two of us to be killed together'. It was the most heroic and gallant think to have done, for the centre was far more dangerous than the side. Then alas! as Fate would have, scarcely had the Sergeant got to his place when a shell came and killed your son. Death was instantaneous. He was burried near Fricourt close to where he fell.' "
