Olds, Cyril Austin Patt
Son of Albert Edward Olds, boot maker and shopkeeper, and Mary Ann Olds, of 231 Church Road, St. George. Younger brother of Albert, Arthur, and Edgar. Also older brother of France and Baby.
Olds was born on 28/06/1894, and attended the School from 1909-1911. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, with the Gloucestershire Regiment 3rd Bn. attd. 1st Bn.. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Olds sadly lost his life on 16/04/1916, as a result of the War.

Olds was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on 18th November 1915, gazette issue 29074, page 1704. For “For gallant conduct in the performance of his duties whilst exposed to heavy shell fire.”

2nd Lieut, 3rd (Reserve) Battn. The Gloucestershire Regt., 4th son of Albert Edwards Olds of Church Road, Redfield, Bristol, Boot and Show manufacturer, by his wife, Mary A., only daughter of the late George Patt of Bideford; b Bristol, co. Gloucester, 28 June, 1804.

Educated Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital and Bristol Grammar School (scholar), where he was a member of the OTC; enlisted in the RAMC 13 August 1914, after the outbreak of war; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 7th October, following; was wounded at St Jean, near Ypres, on the 22nd of that month; was gazetted 2nd Lieut, 3rd Battn. The Gloucestershire Regt 25 March, 1915, being attached to the 1st Battn for training; returned to the front 10th March, 1916, and was killed in action at Snowhill, South-West of Loos, 16th April following. Buried where he fell. His Captain wrote: “Although he had only been with me a short time, he had proved himself and also the regiment. The whole of the battalion mourned for him.”
