Read, Mortimer Charles

Son of Alfred Charles Read, accountant, and Eliza Matilda, of 23 St. Michael’s Park. Younger brother of Winifred Josephine, and Frances E. Also older brother of Elsie Louise, and Norah Kathleen M. Husband of Annie Bessie Read (nee Croft) of 40 Islington Road, Southville, Bristol.

Read was born on 22/11/1887, and attended the School from 1903 Jan-Jul. He served as a Third Engineer in the Navy, with the Merchant Navy, SS Bristol City. Read sadly lost his life on 16/12/1917, as a result of the War.

 

Read is remembered on Tower Hill Memorial, London, Britain.

Torpedoed

​

The SS Bristol City was torpedoed by a SM U-94 on the 16th December 1917, off the south coast of Ireland. Read was one of 30 sailors who did not survive when the boat was lost.
