Recovering the Injured (BGS Chronicle April 1916)
"Of the same age and of the same platoon and almost at the same time [as R.L.V. Helps] fell G.N. Smart, who was in the School for two years from 1910 to 1912 and left from the Upper Fourth to enter Parr's Bank. As a result of the German gas attack, in which Helps was fatally wounded, the stretcher-bearers on the next day had great difficulty in recovering the injured, and while gallantly endeavouring to bring in a wounded man from an isolated post Smart was shot through the heart. He was not at School for a long period, but he was there long enough to give an impression of steadiness and unselfishness, which his life after he left School confirmed, and to which his death has given the final and unquestionable seal."
