Boyce, Percival Osmond Bean

Son of Osmond Boyce, civil engineer, and Edith Mary Boyce, of Chasefield, Knowle. Husband of Florence Eveline Boyce of ‘Dinsdale’, Manor Road, Paignton.

Boyce was born on 10/10/1888, and attended the School from 1904-1905. He served as a Chief Officer in the Navy, with the Merchant Navy, SS Indore. Boyce sadly lost his life on 27/11/1918, as a result of the War.

 

Boyce is buried Paignton Cemetery, Britain, grave reference 2909.

A Career Summary (Merseyside Role of Honour)

Percival Osmond Bean Boyce was born at Calcutta, India on the 1st January 1887. He was the son of Edwin Osmond Bean Boyce and Mary Edith (nee Ward).

His father, who was a civil engineer, was also born at Calcutta whilst his mother was born in Merionethshire, North Wales. His parents were married.

Percival had six siblings; John Leonard Bean (b 1890), Cecil Lindsay Bean (b 1891), Edgar Ronald Bean (b 1892), William Edwin Bean (b 1894), Dorothy (b 1896) and Noel Wilford Bean (b 1899).

At the time of the 1901 census Percival and his brothers John and Cecil were boarders at Keyford College, Frome, Somerset. His mother and younger siblings were living at Chasefield, Wells Road, Bristol.

After he left school Percival returned to India where, in 1906, he took up a commission in the 5th Light Infantry.

On the 19th May 1915 he married Florence Evelyne (nee Cooper) at St. John’s C. of E. Church, Paignton, Devon.

He served as Chief Officer aboard the Elder Dempster cargo ship S.S. Indore during the war and was in receipt of the First World War Mercantile Marine Medal. The Indore was torpedoed and damaged off the coast of County Donega, Ireland on the 25th July 1918 by the German submarine ub-62 with the loss of two of her crew. She was beached but was later refloated.

 

Percy died four months later on the 27th November 1918 and was buried at Paignton Cemetery. His wife lived at Dinsdale, Manor Road, Paignton, after the war.
