Swain, Clifford Maxwell

Son of John Swain, commercial traveller, and Margaret Mary Swain, of 42 Belmont Road. Younger brother of Margaret Elizabeth, Herbert John, Elsie Clara, and Lillian Rose.

Swain was born on 10/04/1899, and attended the School from 1910-1915. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the RAF, with the Royal Air Force 52nd Sqdn.. Swain sadly lost his life on 04/04/1918, as a result of the War.

 

Swain is buried in Picquigny British Cemetery, France, reference A. 5.

Out on a Bombing Expedition (BGS Chronicle April 1919)

 

...entered business in London on leaving the School. As soon as he was old enough he returned to Bristol and joined the University O.T.C., and took a commission in the R.A.F. He was Flight Lieut. Pilot when killed in action in France on April 4th 1918. He had been out on a bombing expedition over the German lines, had finished his work, and got back to an advanced aerodrome when his machine appeared to get out of control and crashed, killing him and the observer. He was 19 years of age.
