Son of William C. Cox, merchant, and of Catherine N Cox, of Ashley Lawn, Yatton. Younger brother of Mary R, William S R, Kathline R, and Edith R. Older brother to Erskine R. Husband of Mrs Florence Julia May Cox.

Cox was born on 29/06/1873, and attended the School from 1889-1890. He served as a Captain in the Army, with the Worcestershire Regiment 1st Bn.. Cox sadly lost his life on 11/03/1915, as a result of the War.

Career

​

Prior to the war Cox was working as an Architect Clerk. Upon his death he left effects of £5098 12s. 7d. to his elder brother Major William Stanley Ramsay Cox, to His Majesty’s Army, and to Charles Edward Barry solicitor. This is the equivalent of over £500,000 today.

CAPTAIN JOHN RAMSAY COX, 6th (Reserve) attd. 1st Battn, The Worcestershire Regiment of Park House, Cheltenham, son of Mrs Cox, Rosefield, Cheltenham, and of the late William Charles Cox, of Ashley Lawn, Yatton, Somerset, was born there on the 29th June, 1873.  He was a grandson of the late Rev. Alexander Ramsay, Vicar of Crewherne, Somerset.  He was educated at Bruton, Somerset, and formerly served in the 6th (Militia) Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment.  He rejoined the Army early in September, 1914, when he was gazetted to the reserve of his old regiment, and after a time was attached to the 11th Battalion, and temporarily employed as a Staff Captain at the 7?th Infantry, Brigade Headquarters.  Early in January he proceeded to the Front with a draft for the 1st Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment, to which he was attached.  He was killed in action about 9 a.m. on the 12th (sic) March, 1915 during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, where to quote the words of his Commanding Officer, “he behaved with the greatest gallantry during the whole operation.”  Captain Cox’s promotion to that rank, to date from the 2nd February, 1913 was not granted until May, 1913.Captain Cox married Florence (Daisy), daughter of the late Commander G Mervyn Comber, R.N., who survives him.  He was a member of the East India United Services Club, and was good at all games, but preferred tennis and golf.  He was also keen on hunting.
