Son of Richard, colliery agent, and Margaret Gething Day. Ward of Ben Day, solicitor at Central Bank Chambers, Leeds. Day loadged at Thorne Lodge during his time at school.

 

Day was born on 10/08/1890, and attended the School from 1899-1904. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, with the Royal Field Artillery, West Riding Brigade.  He was awarded the Military Cross with 1st Bar. Day sadly lost his life on 23/02/1918, as a result of the War.

 

Day is buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium, grave reference VIII. H. 11.

Military Cross with First Bar

Day was awarded the Military Cross on 1st January 1918. Gazette issue 30450, page 34. He was awarded a first bar to the Military Cross on 4th February 1918, gazette issue 30507, page 1601.

 

Gazette Account 05/07/1918 - 30780 / 7892. For conspicuous gallantry and devoation to duty. He commanded his battery in the open during an attack. On the enemy opening a very heavy fire on the battery soon after the attack commenced he calmly walked from gun to gun, encouraging the men, with the result that the battery's rate of fire was maintained throughout the barrage. His great courage and magnificent example inspired his men during a very severe ordeal.
