Denniss, William Calvert

Son of the late John Henry Butters Denniss and Elizabeth Denniss, widow, of Wolverton House, Redland Green. Younger brother of Sarah Elizabeth, Ethel Mary, Alice and John H. Also older brother of George C. Denniss married Elizabeth Dooby in 1864.

Denniss was born on 10/09/1878, and attended the School from 1890-1892. He served as a Lieutenant in the Army, with the East African Intelligence Department.  He was awarded Mentioned in Despatches. Denniss sadly lost his life on 07/02/1916, as a result of the War.

 

Denniss is buried in Taveta Military Cemetery, Kenya, Africa, grave reference VI. B. 3.

 

Denniss was awarded Mentioned in Despatches on 30th June 1916. Gazette issue 29648, page 6565.

Wycliffe and the War

“I am directed by the Secretary, Mr. Bonar Law, to inform you that a despatch has been received from the Governor of the East African Province stating that the late Lieut. W. Denniss, in company with Mr. Hall, Intelligence Agent, went out to reconnoitre a certain strip of bush, where they came into contact with the enemy, lieut. Denniss being killed and Mr. Hall taken prisoner. As the latter was the only eye-witness of the event, the Governor regrets that he is at present unable to furnish more complete details."
