Son of John Gunning, engineer, and Mary Ann Gunning, of 10 Elmdale Road, Clifton. Younger brother of Olive Pauline, Ivy Jane Mary, Laurel Ruth, and John Robert White. Also older brother of Myrtle Rox and Hazel Dorothy.

Gunning was born on 15/03/1893, and attended the School from 1906-1909. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, with the Hampshire Regiment 3rd Bn attd. 10th Bn.. Gunning sadly lost his life on 31/10/1916, as a result of the War.

Gunning is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta, grave reference D. XV. 2.
