Lock, Herbert James Hoddinott

Son of James Candy Lock, yeoman, and Sarah Jane Lock, of Wickhouse, Saltford. Younger brother of Frank Ernest, older brother of Emilie A.

Lock was born on 12/01/1975, and attended the School from 1886-1890. He served as a Trooper in the Army, with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Wellington Mounted Rifles. Lock sadly lost his life on 14/11/1917, as a result of the War.

 

Lock is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel, grave reference B. 53.

 

Lock also fought in the Boer War.

Wellington Mounted Rifles, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, s. of the late James Candy Lock, farmer, by his wife, Sarah Jane (Glenthorn, Saltford), dau. Of George Hoddinott, of Norton St. Philip, co. Somerset; b. Chesterblade, near Shepton Mallett, co. Somerset; educ. Bristol Grammar School; went to New Zealand at the age of 19, and settled at Crofton, Marton, on a farm; fought with the 3rd and 7th New Zealand Contingents in the South African War; was wounded, and was for some time Despatch Rider to the late Colonel Kekewich; joined the Wellington Mounted Rifled in Sept. 1915, although over age, and served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Alexandria, and was killed in action at Ayankara, south of Jaffa, Palestine, 14 Nov. 1917; unm.
