Death in Action (Tamworth Herald – 08th September 1917)

The War

Roll of Honour

2nd Lieut. K. G. McMillan

The death in action on August 16 is announced of 2nd Lieut. Kenneth Gregor McMillan, R.F.A., younger son of Mr. and Mrs. A. McMillan, of Conista, Lower Parkstone, Dorset, and grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Clarke, of Alders, Tamworth. It appears that Lieut. McMillan left home on August 8 for Southampton, and arrived at the firing line on August 14. In a long appreciative letter to his parents, the commanding officer says Lieut. McMillan “came up at once to help me in a very awkward position, having only one officer left. He could have had no sleep, but came willing to do anything, and I knew at once I had a subaltern in whom I could trust, and who would make for the strength and efficiency of the batter. He also helped the doctor with the casualties, and worked very hard, even firing the guns amid shells, by one of which he was killed next day, and was buried where he lay.” A brother officer also wrote that “Mac,” as they all called him, was so absolutely straightforward, and frank, and possessed such a keen sense of humour and a ready wit, which appealed to all who knew him.

Lieut. McMillan trained at Bristol University O.T.C. and Exeter, and was gazetted in April last. Mr. and Mrs. McMillan’s elder son, Norman, of the 7th Cameron Highlanders, has been a prisoner of war in Germany since the battle of Loos, September 26, 1915, and they are asking any friends of his who may be writing to him not to mention the death of his brother.
