Son of Johanna Slade, widow, of 25 Collingwood Road, Redland. Younger brother of Arthur, Harman, Henry, William, and John O. Older brother of Frank Oscar and Herbert F. Frank Oscar also attended Bristol Grammar School, and gave his life during the War.

 

Slade was born on 12/07/1888, and attended the School from 1900-1904. He served as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Army, with the Gloucestershire Regiment 4th Bn. attd. 8th Bn..  He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, and the Military Cross. Slade sadly lost his life on 04/05/1918, as a result of the War.

Slade is buried in Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery, Belgium, reference IV. D. 10.

Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette)

 

Slade was awarded the Military Cross on 3rd June 1916, Gazette issue 29608, page 5577. He was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Order on the 22nd September 1916, Gazette issue 29760, page 9269: “For conspicuous gallantry during operations. He organised with great skill bombing attacks, in order to reach two companies which were isolated in a trench further north. On another occasion he was twice buried by shells in one night, but dug himself out and carried on as if nothing had happened.“

Major E. C. Slade was educated at the Bristol Grammar School, where he was a member of the Cadet Corps. He volunteered for the City of Bristol Rifles Volunteers, now the 4th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, first as private. He got his commission in 1908, and his captaincy September 1911, and has been constantly with the same battalion since the war broke out. He went to the seat of war in the spring of 1915. He obtained his temp. majority in January 1916, and gained afterwards the Military Cross, his name being in the King’s Birthday Honours list in June 1916. He is the son of the late Mr. W. A. Slade and of Mrs. Salde, of 26, Archfield Road, Cotham, Bristol. Mr. W. A. Slade was one of the early Volunteers of the same regiment, and took part in the first review by Queen Victoria in Hyde Park. Major Slade prior to the outbreak of the war was on the staff of Messrs. J. S. Fry and Sons, Ltd., and his fellow-employees will be especially pleased to hear of the distinction he has gained.
