Son of William Hill, wholesale clothier, and Hester Ann, of Stapleton Refectory. Younger brother of Ellen M, Margaret Amy, Marion, William J, Bertram G, Hester G, Arthur G, and Ada Gertrude.

Hill was born on 12/08/1889, and attended the School from 1902-1906. He served as a Captain in the Army, with the Gloucestershire Regiment 4th Bn..  He was awarded the Military Cross with 1st Bar. Hill sadly lost his life on 04/11/1918, as a result of the War.

 

Hill is buried in Landrecies British Cemetery, France, grave reference A. 70.

Awarded Military Cross with 1st Bar (Gazette)

Hill was awarded the Military Cross on 26th May 1917, gazette issue 30095, page 5182:

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy's trenches. He led his men with great dash during the fighting in the enemy front line, himself killing one of the enemy and capturing two prisoners. Later, he organised and led a bombing attack. He was wounded.

 

Hill was awarded 1st Bar to Military Cross on 4th October 1919, gazette issue 31583, page 12245:

For conspicuous gallantry in leading his company in the attacks on Beaurevoir and Maretz, 5th/10th October, 1918. The success of the operation at the first place was largely due to the efficient mopping up of the cellars, which he personally led in the most gallant manner. Throughout the operations he consistantly showed courage and ability of a very high order.

Landrecies (Clifton Rugby Football Club History)

Captain Stanley Frederick Hill, MC & Bar – killed in action 4th November 1918 – Gloucestershire Regiment 4th Battalion. Killed at the crossing the Sambre canal. The Glosters’ last action in France.

Landrecies was the scene of rear-guard fighting on 25 August 1914, after the Battle of Mons, and from that date it remained in German hands until it was captured by the 25th Division on 4 November 1918. Landrecies British Cemetery was made by the 25th Division in November 1918 and all burials date from the period October 1918 to January 1919. Landrecies British Cemetery contains 165 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, 14 of which are unidentified.
