An Accident to His Machine (BGS Chronicle December 1916)

aged 21, 1905-1913. He was the first Grammar School Boy to win a Classical Scholarship at Balliol College, Oxford, and one of the ablest boys who have been at the School. He took his First in Mods in 1915, and immediately afterwards took a commission in the Norfolk Regiment, from which after some months he was transferred to the Motor Machine Gun Corps. The Oxford Magazine says no more than the truth when it states that 'his death cuts short what would almost certainly have been a very distinguished career.' He had great powers of concentration and clear thinking, and a powerful English style: at the Bar he would probably have won great success. He had not been long at the front with the new Corps when an accident to his machine led to his exposing himself, and he was instantaneously killed.
