Son of Edward Lowther, corn merchant, and Kate Lowther, of 44 Tyndalls Park Road. Younger brother of May, and older brother of Charlie E and Cecil. Cecil did not attend BGS, but was also a casualty of the War.

Lowther was born on 16/04/1889, and attended the School from 1900-1904. He served as a Major in the Army, with the Army Service Corps, Mechanical Transport. Lowther sadly lost his life on 10/11/1918, as a result of the War.

 

Lowther is buried in St. Andre Communal Cemetery, France, grave reference I. A. 100.

13th Nov 1918 Roll of Honour Major R Lowther

​

We much regret to record the death of Major R Lowther from pneumonia in France on Sunday last. Major Lowther joined the 4th Gloucesters in 1914, but owing to foot trouble he was transferred to the Army Service Corps, in which he served three years in France. Major Lowther was 30 years of age and was educated at Clifton College and the deepest sympathy will be felt for his widow. He was the eldest son of Mr Edward Lowther, who has now lost two sons in this war, the youngest, Lieut Cecil Lowther RN being killed on August 21st 1916.

Added in ink: ‘It seemed especially sad that just at the close of the war when everyone was looking forward to having their friends and relatives home with them again, that Major Lowther should have developed pneumonia and died the very day before the signing of the armistice.’
