Consolation (BGS Chronicle December 1915)
"Bombadier J.M.P. Philiips was serving with the 2nd Gloucester Battery of the R.F.A., and was with his captain at the Observatory Station when a shell bursting very near wounded him fatally. The captain who was with him wrote: 'He was a favourite with us all, and so cheerful and such a bright boy. I am sure I personally shall miss him greatly. I am very sorry to have to write such a letter, but you will have the consolation of knowing that he died a hero's death.' Many will remember him at School, his frank open face, his affectionate disposition, and the promise of good sportsmanship and good fellowship which he showed; it is sad that the youngest are paying most of the cost."
